Twins, again?!

No, not my twins this time....

I must tell this story.  I really, just cannot help myself.

If you are a daily reader, you will know that this weekend my Dad and Kim (Popi and MaMaw) visited.  What I didn't tell you was that Maggie, their 59 day pregnant dog also visited.

About 45 minutes after Maggie arrive we noticed that she was acting a bit territorial and started "nesting".  Quite literally, she was creating a nest out of pinestraw in our backyard.

Dad indicated that the typical gestation for dogs is 63 days.  Therefore, Maggie was not in labor because she wasn't due until 63 days past "the incident".  (When Dad left Maggie in the yard alone for an hour and came back to find a yorkie mix stranded in the middle of his very well fenced in back yard--oops)

Thankfully, Rodger, my oldest friend's dad and excellent caregiver to animals (Forest Oaks Animal Hospital) was available via telephone call.  He noted that by taking the rectal temperature we could tell if the pups were going to be born within 24 hours.  If the temp is below 100 degrees fareignheit we had 24 hours or less.  If it was 100 or higher, we had up to 3 days.  Sure enough, that temperature was hovering around 99.5.  LOVE IT.

Maggie was freaking out, of course Sally and the cats weren't making anything better.  The crying babies only seemed to increase Maggie's agitation.  Dad and Kim decided they better head home just in case they were born early.

Turns out, Rodger was right.  Those pupies (Anya and Leo) were born around 7am in Mooresville NC on Sunday morning.

Pictured above are Maggie and her "twins".

  1. Looks like twinning is contagious in your house, Morgan. Hmmmm. Don't mean anything, just sayin'...
